Diss Town Council Operations:
Diss Town Council has been working hard to put in place measures to support the community through the Covid-19 situation.
We are working on distributing a leaflet to all residents with information regarding who to contact if you need support, guidelines on volunteering and keeping well and cut out cards to complete if you are able to volunteer for vulnerable neighbours. Subject to a supply of paper and delivery service, this should be delivered over the next few weeks.
We are also partnering with South Norfolk & Broadland District Councils to ensure volunteer support is coordinated in Diss and the surrounding area.
In terms of the operation of the Council, staff and councillors will continue to answer queries via email and telephone. The Council Offices are now closed with administrative staff working from home and essential maintenance services continuing for the time being.
In line with Government guidance, most of the Council owned facilities have been closed. Play areas at both Diss Park and the Skateboard Park on Shelfanger Road have been cordoned off. Likewise, any enclosed public spaces namely the pod and Multi Use Games Area on the Park are no longer in use. We have also closed the public toilets on the Park.
The Diss Youth & Community Centre is only in use by Park Radio which is providing a vital community radio service and the FareShare Food Scheme, which is also considered to be an essential voluntary service supporting vulnerable people who are without a network of friends and families. All other activity at this site has been postponed until further notice.
Diss Cemetery is accessible during the day and closed in the evenings. The boardwalk and gardens remain open at all times providing an option for those doing their daily exercise.
Food stalls only are being invited to attend the Friday market this week (27th March) so the road closure will not be enforced. Please ensure you adhere to the social distancing rules when visiting the market.
At the last Full Council meeting in March, members discussed what action it would take to ensure that decisions could continue being made in the absence of further meetings. It was agreed that the Clerk shall have delegated authority to make decisions on behalf of the Council where such decisions cannot reasonably be deferred and must be made in order to comply with a commercial or statutory deadline. This would be carried out in consultation with the relevant committee Chairman and Council Leader or Town Mayor.
At the same meeting it was also agreed that Town Mayor Councillor Sonia Browne and Council Leader Councillor Simon Olander would continue in their respective roles until May 2021 to provide continuity at this unprecedented time.
Given the reduction in available outlets to purchase food, the opening times of the local supermarkets has been collated below for ease of reference. Please note these times have been taken from the supermarket websites.
- Aldi is open 8am – 10pm and Sundays 10am – 4pm (may close at 8pm for re-stocking)
- Tesco as above but 8am – 9pm Saturdays
- Morrisons 8am – 8pm and Sundays 10am – 4pm.
Some supermarkets have dedicated hours for the elderly, vulnerable and NHS workers. NHS staff who show a valid ID card can shop for an hour before normal opening hours at both Tesco and Morrisons.
Market Stall home delivery: If you live in Diss and need a vegetable and groceries home delivery, Dianne and Steve who run the fruit & veg stall are offering a home delivery service. Get in touch if you require their phone number.
Councillors and staff at Diss Town Council would like to take this opportunity to extend their best wishes to everyone in our local community and thank volunteers for all they are doing to support those vulnerable members of our community.
Please keep well and follow the Government’s guidelines.
If you need support, please don’t hesitate to contact the Town Council on 01379 643848 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
